Fantastic Success Celebrated At Junior Awards

15 May 2014 by Tim Statham

Triton Hockey Club celebrated an incredibly successful 2013/14 season for its junior section at its end of season awards last Saturday. The hockey club is based in Alsager but incorporates junior members from all across South Cheshire, both its boys’ teams play matches at the former Alsager MMU campus site with training and other games including girls’ matches taking place at Alsager Leisure Centre.

During the season the club fielded Boys Under 13s and Under 15s teams and a Girls Under 14s team plus mixed teams at Under 12s and Under 10s age groups. The main awards were presented by Chairman of Alsager Town Council, Councillor Colin Burgess to Bethan Robinson (U10s), George Chaytors and Michael Hastings (U13s, Beavers), Josh Barker (U15s, Beavers), Amy Delap-Flinn and Emily Bell (U14s, Colts) as the most improved players. Matthew Kerry (U10s), Luis Cuttle (U13s, Beavers), Nat Cain (U15s, Badgers) & Becky Shaw (U14s, Colts) were the players of the season from each junior team.

The club’s Head of Junior Development Chris Calam informed the presentation that, during the season, 40 of the club’s junior players had represented East Cheshire in northwest England Hockey Board Junior Academy Centre matches. From those selections thirteen of the club’s players have been invited to train during the summer with Manchester Pumas in the England Hockey Board’s Junior Regional Performance Centre for the northwest.

The players selected for Manchester Pumas are Oli Cuttle, James Moorhouse, Ben Wilson (U15 Boys), Fionn McKinney, Adam Simpson, Nat Cain (U16 Boys), Tom Payne, Dan Blackburn, Joe Hough (U17 Boys), Mike Calam (U18s Boys) Gaby Goodman, Emily Statham (U16 Girls) and Katie Cuttle (U18 Girls). Chris Calam told the audience that the club was incredibly proud of these achievements but especially Oli Cuttle & James Moorhouse who currently represent the UK Lions U14 Touring Team. They recently visited Gibraltar, played against Wales U16s earlier in the season and have other overseas fixtures to fulfil. Furthermore George Chaytors & Toby Farrington have been chosen for Tensworth U13 team in the UK Championships next month, a process that will conclude the selection for next season’s UK Lions squad.

Triton Hockey Club Chair Steve Wade commented “Our junior coaches have done a fantastic job this season and everyone should be rightfully proud of the junior club’s success in the England Hockey Board single system”.

The following evening the Club’s juniors were equally celebrated in the East Cheshire Junior Academy end of season presentation where seven players won awards. In the U14 boys, Oli Cuttle won Player of the Year and Richard Lyon was Most Improved Player. Fionn McKinney and Tom Payne were Player of the Season in the U15 and U16 Boys respectively. Katie Cuttle and Ed Bates were Most Improved Player in the U17s Girls and Boys teams whilst Oscar Lindblad was awarded Most Improved Goalkeeper amongst the U13s and U14s Boys squads.

Players from the Club’s junior coaching system are now forming the backbone of the senior teams. The Ladies’ 1s team won the Cheshire Women’s League Division 3 and four of that team were in junior Girls’ setup just two season ago. Additionally U16s goalkeeper Lucy Evans won player of the year playing for the Ladies’ 2s in Division 5 of the same league. Equally former junior boys players played a significant part in all the senior men’s teams during the season with the club able to field a new fourth men’s team comprising almost entirely of players who played junior hockey the previous season.

The mixed under U10s team and Girls U12s finished their season with a visit to Timperley Hockey Club who in recent years have put on a themed event, this year clubs were asked to represent a Commonwealth Games country. Triton chose to compete as Bermuda with all the players, coaches and some parents donning Bermuda shorts for the occasion together with the teams being equipped with Bermuda flags and a ‘Bermuda Triangle’.

The mixed U10s is quite an ‘experienced’ team now having played together for two seasons. This was ably demonstrated on the pitch as the team won 4 games, drew 1 and only narrowly lost to an all-boys team from Neston that was recently crowned Northern England U10s champions. Luis Cuttle scored 10 goals in total, Sophie Marsden 3, Thomas Statham 2 & Josh Lewis 1. Will Gibbon was superb in goal and along with the excellent Ele Beetlestone, Benji Townsend and George Jenkins as the rest of a mean defence that conceded just 4 goals. Bethan Robinson played extremely well on the wings and contributed much to the excellent displays.

In the afternoon the U12s Girls continued the Commonwealth theme and represented Triton as Bermuda, also decked out in suitable Bermuda shorts. Clubs were encouraged to bring along a junior umpire and Triton was very grateful to U15 girls Gaby Goodman and Alex Lewis who did a great job in the afternoon and morning respectively.

The afternoon format was slightly different, playing five 20 minute matches, which was quite a challenge when the team had no substitutes to draw from. The squad was Maddie Goodman, Isabel Lewis, Imogen Ford, Lily Rowles, Evie Weston, Katie Morrey and goal keeper Alex Milnes. They are mixed experience team with a number of the girls having only competed once or twice before but despite this they put on a great performance convincingly winning their first two matches, losing the next two, and ending the day with a great win against the host’s A team.

The 2013/14 junior season was a terrific success and the Club looks forward to more of the same when training recommences on Saturday 6 September 2014 at 9am. It’s always looking to recruit any new members from age 7 upwards with both inexperienced and experienced hockey players all welcome at the Alsager Leisure Centre Astroturf pitch. Details can be obtained from Chris Calam on 07810 155746, or via the Club’s website
