Triton Hockey Club Ready To Welcome New Season

03 August 2014 by Tim Statham

Triton Hockey Club based at Alsager Leisure Centre is gearing up ready for the new season that begins in September. The Club is looking to build on the successes of last season and its fantastic achievements in recent years. Preseason activities for the senior teams begin in August with training and friendlies, the senior men’s teams start their league campaigns on 20 September but the ladies’ teams begin their season the week before.

The 2013/14 season was very successful for both the senior and junior sections of the club. The Ladies 1s secured the Division 3 title and promotion to Division 2 of the Cheshire Women’s League on the final day of the season back in March.

The Men’s 1s also had a fantastic season following a long unbeaten run but had double heartache of missing out on promotion on the last day of the season and then as gallant runners up the final of the Cheshire Plate. The team will be stronger this season and better prepared from those experiences.

The junior section of the club has been the bed-rock of the Club’s recent successes and 2013/14 eclipsed even the heights of previous triumphs. The Boys U14s played in the Northern area finals of England Hockey’s national championships narrowly missing out on a place in the national finals day. Similarly the U10 Boys missed out on a place in the Cheshire Cup Final after losing 2-1 in the semi-finals in a closely fought game against an opponent that was crowned Northern area champions a few weeks afterwards.

However the greatest junior success came from a Club record number of juniors selected for county, regional and national representation. 40 of the club’s junior players had represented East Cheshire in northwest England Hockey Board Junior Academy Centre matches against other northwest counties during spring 2014. From those selections thirteen of the club’s players were selected to train during the summer with Manchester Pumas in the England Hockey Board’s Junior Regional Performance Centre for the northwest.

The players selected for Manchester Pumas were Oli Cuttle, James Moorhouse, Ben Wilson (U15 Boys), Fionn McKinney, Adam Simpson, Nat Cain (U16 Boys), Tom Payne, Dan Blackburn, Joe Hough (U17 Boys), Mike Calam (U18s Boys) Gaby Goodman, Emily Statham (U16 Girls) and Katie Cuttle (U18 Girls). Triton Hockey Club is incredibly proud of these achievements but especially Oli Cuttle of Sandbach Boys School & James Moorhouse of Alsager School who also represented the UK Lions U14 Touring Team during the year.

The Juniors re-start training on Saturday 6 September at Alsager Leisure Centre. Training takes place between 9m and 11-15am throughout the season and all children are welcome to attend from beginners to accomplished players. In the afternoon of Saturday 6 September the Club celebrates its Club Day with games amongst the senior players with a social event including barbecue at Alsager Cricket Club afterwards.

Anyone who requires further information about playing for Triton, either at a junior or senior level, should contact Chris Calam on 07810 155746 or, all details can also be found on the Club’s website
