Stephen Wade Steps Down As Club Chairman

12 May 2015 by Tim Statham

After 5 very successful years heading up the Alsager based hockey club, Stephen Wade has decided to step down as Chairman at the Club’s AGM. Steve took over the reigns in 2010 and has presided over a very successful period in the young Club’s 15-year history. During this time the Men’s 1s was promoted to Division 3 South of the Northwest Hockey League and in the last two seasons narrowly missed out on promotion to Division 2. The Ladies’ 1s has been even more successful enjoying four back to back promotions and last season playing in Division 2 of the Cheshire Women’s League for the first time.

However Steve is most proud of the achievements of the Club’s junior section, he enthused “The junior club goes from strength to strength thanks to Chris Calam's excellent leadership together with some great volunteer coaches. It's no coincidence that the successful Clubs in the Northwest have strong junior sections and it gives me a warm glow when I read match reports that our juniors have beaten one of the Northwest’s big clubs - not to mention being crowned Cheshire Champions.”

Following the success of the junior sections over the recent seasons, Triton under Steve’s leadership has launched 2 new teams - Men's 4's and Ladies 2's – to fulfill the demand to play senior hockey by former juniors at the Club. Steve has been rightly credited with implementing numerous successful projects over the last five years including vibrant Facebook and Twitter pages, greatly expanding the number of qualified club umpires, earning the Clubs’ First accreditation, introducing a club shop, purchasing pitch side shelters and improving junior kit especially for the goalkeepers - amongst numerous other initiatives.

Club spokesman Tim Statham said “I’ve been privileged to work together with Steve over the last 5 years but especially with the junior girls’ team that subsequently became the Triton Ladies’ 2s. I recall a conversation with Steve after a Saturday morning training session about four years ago when the Girls had finished and the U10s were playing on the pitch. Steve was impressed with how well they played hockey for such young children and commented in a jovial manner that maybe one day we’d have an international. Ironically it was just last month that Gaby Goodman represented Wales U16s which was an especially proud moment that this ambition was realized by one of the players he originally started coaching”.

But true to form Steve leaves the Club after implementing just one final club project, successfully overseeing a merger between the Ladies’ sections of South Cheshire and Triton hockey clubs. The merger was approved at the AGM last Sunday and the two clubs will initially field 3 teams in the Cheshire Women’s League next season with ambitions to expand to four teams.

Tim Statham added, “Although Steve is stepping down as Chairman I’m certain he’ll still play a big part within the club. His youngest daughter Lottie played in the Triton Ladies’ 1s last season and that will encourage him to keep being involved in club team management. Plus he’s as determined as ever to ensure the Sports Hub is delivered at the former MMU site and that project includes a top notch hockey facility”.

Club stalwart Adrian Perry will takeover as Club chairman with last year’s first team captain Martin Gregory taking up the reigns as Vice-Chairman. Everyone at the Club wishes 'Beastie' and Martin all the very best in their new roles.

The new senior team captains elected at the AGM for next season are;

Men’s 1s Tom Chaddock; Vice-captain Jay Punshon
Ladies’ 1s Sammie Jones; Vice-captain Becki Burndred
Men’s 2 David Farrington; Vice-captain tbc
Ladies’ 2s Julie Harris; Vice-captain tbc
Men’s 3s Nathan Goode; Vice-captain Si Cruxton
Ladies’ 3s Jenna Hulme; Vice-captain Tracy Crump
Men’s 4s Alan Lewis; Vice-captain tbc

Meanwhile there was a grand end to the season for the Triton Juniors Saturday. The morning saw the youngsters picking up their Stix Skills awards for the endeavours last weekend in the annual assessment. Additionally the junior coaches' and managers' recognized high achievement with their annual awards too.

Cubs: Alex Hughes
Beavers Squad: Charlie Leech, Ben Laxton
Badgers Squad: Nathan Hopkinson, Ben Hough
U10s: George Jenkins, Alex Mackey
U12s training group: Sorcha O'Brien, Isabel Lewis, Lucy Hawkrigg

Deciding upon the awards is really the toughest job for all the Triton coaches & managers to make. Every year there are strong cases that can be made for each youngster at the Club. This season was no different and the list of nominees was even greater than ever.

On to the East Cheshire Junior Academy Centre awards last Saturday night in Congleton. It was incredibly heartwarming to hear all the Triton coaches, managers & administrators who are involved in JAC, but of course all the Triton players that made such a fantastic contribution to the East Cheshire success story. Triton players featured prominently amongst the winners of most improved & best players in the different JAC age groups presented by Wales international defender Mike Shaw;

Maddie Goodman U13 - best player
Will Turner U14 - most improved player
