Triton HC Welcomes New Season & New Players
01 September 2016 by Tim Statham
Triton Hockey Club based at Alsager Leisure Centre is gearing up ready for the new 2016/17 season that begins this coming weekend, Saturday 3 September. The Club is looking to build on the successes of last season and its fantastic achievements in recent years. Preseason activities began in August with training and friendlies, the senior men’s teams start their league campaigns on 24 September but the ladies’ teams begin their season two weeks earlier on 10 September.
Triton Men's 1 2015/16 champions Northwest Div 3S promoted to Northwest Div 2
The 2015/16 season was very successful for both the senior and junior sections of the club. The Men’s 1s had a fantastic season following a long unbeaten run and secured promotion to Northwest Division 2. It also had a good run too in the England Hockey Vase knockout losing in the last 16 on a penalty shootout. The Men’s 2s enjoyed a great terrific season too, with a very young but talented team it earned an unexpected promotion on the last day of the season to Northwest Division 4 South. Additionally the Men’s 4s was promoted in the close season to Division 7 South following a reorganisation of the Northwest League structure after it finished third in the league below. The Ladies’ 1s had a successful season but narrowly missed out on promotion but aims for another strong campaign playing in Cheshire Division 1.

The junior section of the club has been the bed-rock of the Club’s recent successes. Much of the success for both the men’s and ladies’ senior teams last season was underpinned by players who had come through the Club’s junior system. However the greatest junior success came from a Club record number of juniors selected for county, regional and national representation. 40 of the club’s junior players had represented East Cheshire in northwest England Hockey Board Junior Academy Centre matches against other northwest counties during spring 2016. From those representatives nine of the club’s players were selected to train during the summer with Manchester Pumas in the England Hockey Board’s Junior Regional Performance Centre for the northwest.

The Juniors re-start training on Saturday 3 September at Alsager Leisure Centre. Training takes place between 9 and 11-15am throughout the season and all children are welcome to attend from beginners to accomplished players. In the afternoon of Saturday 3 September the Men’s 1s has a friendly fixture against Winnington Park starting at 12pm. Straight afterwards at 2pm the Club celebrates its Club Day as part of England Hockey’s HockeyFest celebrations with games amongst the senior players followed by a social event at Alsager Cricket Club. Any prospective new players are most welcome to come down to meet the captains and other players.
Following the wonderful Gold Medal success of the GB Ladies at the Rio Olympics, Triton Hockey Club like England Hockey expects a big upsurge in interest amongst children and teenagers. Anyone who requires further information about playing for Triton, either at a junior or senior level, should contact Chris Calam on 07810 155746 or chriscalam@yahoo.co.uk, all details can also be found on the Club’s website tritonhockey.co.uk or FaceBook page.
