Pride and Excitement Greet the 2017/18 Season

30 August 2017 by Tim Statham

The players and members at Triton are excited to begin the new season buoyed by much exciting news over the close season.

The development of junior players has always been at the heart of the Triton ethos and the Club has always been very proud of their achievements over many years. This reached new heights at the beginning of August when U15s Stelios Piperakis and Maddie Goodman were both selected to represent the Pennine Pumas, the north of England representative team, in England Hockey’s Futures Cup. The Futures Cup sees teams from the four English regions plus one each from Scotland and Wales compete over 4 days. England hockey uses the competition to select its U16s and U18 s teams for both girls and boys for the forthcoming season.

Stelios’ and Maddie’s selection was the first time any Triton Junior has taken participated in the Futures Cup. Both youngsters performed incredibly well as too did their teams. Maddie’s girls team beat the West of England team and Wales team in its group games whilst Stelios’ boys team also won both its group games over the South of England team and also Wales. Maddie then played the Midlands team in the final but sadly lost 2-0 and although Stelios’ team also lost to the West of England he did have the consolation of grabbing a terrific consolation goal.

Despite this disappointment both Stelios and Maddie were thrilled at winning silver medals in the 2017 Futures Cup. Club spokesman Tim Statham said “Stelios’and Maddie’s achievements are testament not only to all their hard work and dedication over recent seasons but also to the Club’s terrific junior development programme led by Chris Calam, Neil Titford, Alan Lewis and Aimee Standring. Both players have much promise and the ability to play hockey at a very high level”.

Triton Hockey Club was also thrilled to receive the news over the summer that the new Sports Hub will finally be built at the former MMU Campus in Alsager. Led by its Chairman Stephen Wade the Club has fought a very positive campaign to retain hockey facilities as part of the sports legacy within the redevelopment of the old MMU campus. The developer has now confirmed in its successful planning application that a band new hockey pitch will be built, along with changing and other support facilities, to replace the old one used by the Club as its second pitch for many seasons. The Club is hopeful that the new pitch will be available in the next 12 to 18 months but in the meantime will have to temporarily play some of its home fixtures and also train in Sandbach.

The 2017/18 season will see the Club’s Ladies 1s play for the first time in North League Div 2 Southwest which is the highest level the team has ever played within the England Hockey league pyramid. The previous season saw the team scoop many accolades in a terrific campaign that won the Cheshire Division 1 league title with a game to spare, Becki Burndred was the top goal scorer in the League and Maddie Goodman was the League player of the season. The Ladies’ 1s begins its campaign on 16 September under the stewardship of new captain Kate Dale with a friendly against local rivals Crewe Vagrants.

The Men’s 1s also had a terrific season last time out but sadly ran out of steam in Northwest Division 2 with a couple of games of the season left to finish in third place. Whilst this was a tremendous performance for a team playing at this level for the first time, skipper Tom Chaddock will be keen to ensure his squad learns from that disappointment this time around. The team starts its league campaign at home agains Manchester on Sat 23 September.

As part of England Hockey’s annual Hockey Fest that traditionally launches each new season, Triton HC has its Club day taking place on Sun 3 September at Alsager Leisure Centre from 1pm until 4. Any new players are welcome to come down and meet the captains and club members and enjoy a fun game of hockey. The Club has a total of 4 senior Men’s and 3 senior Ladies’ teams and is always looking for new players at all levels of abilities.

Equally general training will be at Sandbach Boys School this season Wednesdays from 7-30 until 9-00 and again any new players are always welcome. Further details can be found at, the Triton HC facebook page or by contacting Alan Lewis on 07833 430799 or

The junior teams restart their training on Saturday 2 September and games commence following Sat with home games versus Deeside HC. All children from 6 to 15 are welcome to come to Alsager Leisure Centre at 9am and take part, the first session is free for newcomers, or alternatively contact Chris Calam on 07810 155746 or for more information.
