Regional selections

Following its End of Season awards presentation the previous week, Triton Hockey Club juniors celebrated more success this week with accolades for its top junior players. Five players from the club based in Alsager, Sandbach & Kidsgrove have been selected for the Manchester Pumas Junior Regional Performance Centre squads to represent the North West of England. Adam Simpson & Fionn McKinney were both selected for the Under 15 boys, Dan Blackburn for the Under 16 boys, Michael Calam for the Under 17 boys whilst was Amy Ward has been included in the Under 18 girls squad.

Adam from Sandbach Boys School has just enjoyed his first season with Triton picking up player of the season for his club team the previous week. Dan is also from Sandbach Boys School and this is his second selection for the Manchester Pumas. Fionn & Mike are both from Alsager School, Fionn followed his older sister Kit to the club a few seasons ago. Like Dan, Mike is also enjoying a recall to Manchester Pumas having already represented Triton Men’s 1st team last season. Amy previously attended Alsager School and is now studying at Newcastle-under-Lyme College, she also made her debut for Triton Ladies 1st team towards the end of last season.

Triton’s Head of Junior Development Chris Calam said “the selection process for the Manchester Pumas JRPC squad is extremely competitive. Only 30 outstanding juniors from Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside, Manchester and Cheshire at each group are selected. It’s a fantastic achievement for an expanding club such as Triton to have so many representatives in the northwest teams. These players are one step closer to representing England”. Additionally four Triton players were selected for Under 14 Tensworth North West; Oliver Cuttle, James Moorhouse, Ben Wilson and also Adam Simpson whose age still allows him to qualify for this representative team.

There were more accolades for Triton juniors at the East Cheshire County Junior Academy Centre awards on Saturday night at Macclesfield. Mollie Bell was awarded ’Most Improved Player’ for the Under 15s team whilst Amy Ward picked up the same award for the Under 17s team. For Amy the award comes just two weeks after being named best player in the Cheshire Women’s Hockey League Division 6. Mollie attends Brine Lees School in Nantwich and has been playing for the Triton Ladies 2nd team for the majority of last season.

The junior section of the club did intend to complete its season the previous weekend but an invite from Timperley Hockey Club led to a hurried selection process as the club entered its Under 15s Boys and Under 15s Girls plus a mixed Under 10s team. Girls’ Team Manager Tim Statham said “we were ready for a break after a very hectic season but the Timperley 7’s event is so good we couldn’t resist. The juniors at the Club are always really keen to play & within about half an hour Ian Blackburn, the Boys’ Team Manager and I had two squads organised.” The competition was worth the effort as the Boys, including Dan & Fionn finished runners up losing in the final on a penalty shoot-out whilst the Girls led by Mollie won meanest defence award.
