Men's 2s Champions, Ladies' 2s Survive

27 March 2018 by Tim Statham

Didsbury Northern Men’s 3s 6 Triton Men’s 1s 2

Men’s 1s suffered a 6-2 defeat in their final league game of the season. The result sees the team finish 5th in the table. Both goals came from penalty corners, with Tom Chaddock and Fionn McKinney both converting. All in all, a transitional season for the team, bringing in 6 regular under 18s for their first experience of first team Hockey and 5th place in the league was a good effort in the end given the strength of some of the teams in the division.

Triton Men’s 1s 0 Lymm Men’s 1s 2

Triton Men’s 1s season finished after a 2-0 loss to Lymm in the quarter-final of the fledgling Tier 2 Cup competition. Having already lost to Lymm twice in the league this season, Triton needed a much better performance to stand any chance of progressing to the semi final. The hosts put in a committed performance and on another day could have got a better result. At 0-0, Triton forced a series of penalty corners, Tony Stevens nearly converted one at the back post. Lymm took the lead 10 minutes before the break. A few chances came and went for Triton but none could be converted and Lymm extended its lead from a deflection at a penalty corner. In what remained of the game, Jack Newell, Rob Moss and Tom Chaddock all had shots on goal but were thwarted by the Lymm goalkeeper.

Triton Men’s 2s 1 Sandbach Men’s 1s 0

The Men’s 2s won the Division 5s title with a narrow home win over local rivals Sandbach. Both teams had already secured promotion so the teams took to the pitch with passion and vigor, eager to decide the title. Triton played their usual routine of passing around the back and looking for opportunities whilst Sandbach were quick on the counter attack and pass through balls. After a hard fought first half the score remained deadlocked at 0-0.

The second half saw a slight advantage go to Triton as it began to hold the majority of possession leading to frequent attacks and putting the pressure on Sandbach's back line. From this pressure, Triton won an interception on Sandbach's back line. This opportuniy was immediately capitalised upon leading to Greg Williamson scoring to take a 1-0 lead. Sandbach fought back ferociously in an attempt to equalise but thanks to an iron defence and good goalkeeping, the hosts were able to keep a clean sheet. The final whistle blew but 1-0 was a most ironic score line to divide 2 teams that have scored over 200 goals between them this season The narrow win was enough to secure a League double over Sandbach and most importantly the title.

Triton Ladies’ 2s 3 Timperley Ladies’ 4s 2

With Buckley losing to Neston, Triton Ladies’ 2s needed a point to avoid relegation in Division 3. But survival was secured with an amazing win as Sophie Stanley scored her first goal for the team, Tracy Crump added another and almost inevitably skipper Julie Harris completed the job for her team with the winning goal.

Sandbach Men’s 6s 1 Triton Men’s 3s 6

A fantastic performance and win over near neighbours Sandbach gave the Men’s 3s a great end to a frustrating season. The team finished a point behind second placed Bowdon Men’s 5s to frustratingly miss out on automatic promotion to Division 6.

Triton Men’s 4s 2 Sale Men’s 2s 5

The Men’s 4s slipped to defeat despite another promising performance by its youngsters that bodes well for next season in the lower division. The first half showing from Triton was poor with Sale, playing with 10, going in at half time 4 - 1 up. Sale took the lead with Triton equalising immediately from the resultant pushback. Some wonderful, quick, hockey by Harry Clare and Matt Kimberlin tore Sale apart down the right side with passes exchanged swiftly and Kimberlin playing the ball into the D for Jack Robinson to finish. Sadly, the equaliser did not settle Triton down and Sale, with a number of experienced and talented players, were able to take the chances they created.

The second half was much improved and it was pleasing to see that the Triton youngsters showed character in trying to turn the result around. Sam Cotter pulled the score back to 4 - 2, slotting the ball in at the far post. Shortly after, Ted Apps was very unlucky not to get Triton's third, from a short corner, due to a fantastic clearance on the line. Had that gone in, the result may well have been different. Sale managed to score a fifth and Triton continued to press but were unable to convert chances. Triton probably had more play in the opponent's half but, sadly, could not match Sale's clinical finishing and the score ended 5 - 2. Despite the relegation skipper Rob Timewell is encouraged by how his teenagers in particular played since the turn of the year.

Alderley Edge Ladies’ 7s 2 Triton Ladies’ 3s 1

Triton Ladies’ 3s put up a very brave performance and was an unlucky to be defeated. There were some excellent runs were made by the Triton the defence and contrary some great saves were made by goalie Karen Ruston. The Triton goal came after some great linking play between Hannah Wright and Emily Bell that led to Bell scoring her fourteenth of the season.

Deeside Ladies’ 4s 1 Triton Ladies’ 3s 0

Triton Ladies’ 3s travelled to league champions Deeside for its final gamewho had secured its title several matches ago. The first half was more than equal with both sides having some good chances. However, the visitors’ tired legs needed to hold off a Deeside rampage towards the end of the half.

Triton started the stronger team in the second half dominating possession and their best chance of the game fell to skipper Jenna Hulme but the keeper saved her diving shot. As the match wore on tiredness again manifested itself in the Triton team but this did not stop the ladies playing their heart out. Ele Beetlestone and Alex Lewis made an impact through the wings while Sophie Stanley and Sorcha OBrien ran tirelessly in the middle. As always this season though the story belongs with the defence, Becky Pitt, Carol Malbon and Sandra Stanley held off everything that came their way. Karen Ruston more than backed them up in goal. Deeside attacked in numbers and finally found a way through the Triton defence to score the only goal of the game. The remaining minutes of the game showed how far triton have come from the start of the season, more than matching a skilful league champion.

Wilmslow 5 Triton Badgers U15s 0

For its final game the Badgers travelled to Wilmslow with new with new players Freya Diamond, Ben Richardson and Jack Plant drafted in. Triton began the 1st half with confidence but Wilmslow was strong, fast paced and worked well together. But Triton defended excellently typified by player of the match Connor Berry, Ben Truscott and goalie George Jenkins, working as a team to back each other up so well. It was backs to the walls for most of the half going in 3-0 down to Wilmslow after a penalty flick awarded against just before half time.

The 2nd half was much the same as the first half with Wilmslow putting on pressure and numerous penalty corners defended. As the rain set in another 2 goals including another penalty flick made the final score 5-0 but that didn’t do the Badgers’ players justice. The way they played as a team was fantastic today, the way they covered for each other and battled until the end was admirable.
