Heartbreak For U12s in Cheshire Cup

13 March 2018 by Tim Statham

Preston 1 Triton Beavers U13s 4

The Beavers put in a fabulous performance up at Preston in the graveyard shift to win 4-1. Playing against a team with at several North Lancs players and with no subs in its squad, the team put up a fantastic display. Preston started really well transferring the ball to the flanks but some terrific defending from Harrison Salt, Matt Kerry and super debutant Emily O'Neill kept Preston out. When the home team did get through Joe Chadwick was again magnificent in goal. Triton took the lead through a lovely solo effort by Alexander Mackey. The Beavers began to dominate the middle of the pitch through Gennaro Reddy who was unlucky not to score with a couple of terrific reverse hits. The team did double its lead when Bethan Robinson popped up at the back post to turn the ball home for her 12th of the season.

The second half started with Preston determined to even the score, but the Salt, O'Neill & Kerry defence was like a brick wall and Joe in goal was untroubled. The Beavers won a number of penalty corners and following one, Alexander scored his second with a thunderous reverse hit. Tom Statham produced a tremendous run beating four defenders but for some reason he chose to pass instead of slotting under the keeper. Player of the match Tom was then through again with an identical mazy run but was badly fouled by the keeper, the umpire gave a penalty corner and not a penalty flick to the bemusement of all the parents. Preston pulled a goal back, but this just spurred the visitors on. Some great work by James Bell on the right saw him go close a couple of times and Jonathan Holme on the left defended like a Trojan. Finally Tom put Alexander through whilst his hat-trick was denied, brother Nicolas Mackey was on hand to rifle home to clinch a very fine 4-1 win.

Triton Badgers U15s 0 Timperley 4

The Badgers gave a great account of itself against an older Timperley team but ultimately went down at home. The first half was an excellent display of teamwork, every player listened to the morning’s team talk and really gelled together well. The Badgers passed strongly and gained confidence as the half went on. Unfortunately towards the end of the half Timperley finally broke the hosts’ defence to lead 0-1 at half time. The 2nd half began with a stronger Timperley who consistently put passes together to tire Triton resulting in 3 well-worked goals ending the game 0-4.

Hard luck for the U12s losing the semi final in a penalty shoot out

Boys Cheshire Cup

Triton U12s and U10s boys competed in the Cheshire Cup competition on Sunday. The U12s fought a great campaign getting through to the semi-final undefeated and with just one goal conceded. The first game against Deeside was a tight affair finishing all square. The team then defeated Bowdon 2, Lymm, Neston, Alderley Edge and finally Chester 2 to secure a relatively comfortable passage to the semi finals, all without conceding a single goal. Alexander Mackey and Ben Brock shared ten goals between them whilst Captain Matt Kerry, Benji Townsend and Jonathan Holme secured the impregnable defence. Gennaro Reddy, Harry Topping and debutant Alex Hughes created plenty of opportunities from the wide positions and Scott Whittaker was unlucky to get on the score sheet against Chester.

Timperley would be the opponents with a chance to avenge last year’s defeat. The game was end to end but a penalty corner at the death gave Timperley a chance. Ben Brock was out like whippet but a strike caught his ankle, Ben was injured but the retaken penalty corner was missed. Extra time loomed, Triton tired and without its talismanic goal scorer the counter attack opportunity was missed. But at the death another penalty corner & Triton had its chance but Alexander Mackey missed. To the penalty shoot out - Joe Chadwick saved two, a chance to win was spurned and Timperley won in sudden death. Sometimes sport is so cruel and you don’t get what you deserve.

U10s put up a fantastic performance at Macclesfield

In the afternoon the U10s took to the stage. Other than Nicolas Mackey the team hadn't played in this competition before. The platers gave a terrific account of themselves with a few narrow defeats and a hard earned draw over Bowdon. Rhys Phillips played his first ever games in goal and was terrific, Seb Wright and Ben Cliffe played fantastically well in defence, Nicolas Mackey and Fergus Clare carried the attack and were so unlucky not to score several goals, Harry Nixon, Will Chadwick and Beth Wilson gave the team some great width too. The team thoroughly enjoyed its afternoon in Macclesfield, with a bit more practice it can go back and make a name for itself next year.

Special mention to Triton’s two 'old' boys - Tom Statham (U12s competition) and Alexander Mackey (U10s competition) who did an absolutely terrific job umpiring and impressed all of the adult officials. Thanks for all the support and help off the parents too and to Tom's coaching input in the afternoon.
