Men's 1s Through to the Quarter Final

14 February 2019 by Tim Statham

Triton Men’s 1s 1 Blackburn Northern Men’s 1s 2

Triton Men’s 1s slipped to another home defeat with a disappointing 2-1 loss against Blackburn which made it three games without a win for the team. Piers Wooler scored the solitary goal and despite good chances for Ed Bates and Martin Gregory, the team couldn’t turn a 2-0 half time deficit although it did dominate much of the second period.

Triton Ladies’ 1s 1 Golborne Ladies’ 1s 1

The Ladies’ 1s put up a great battling performance against Golborne and were disappointed not to come away with all three points. Despite some great attacking play, Triton was prevented from securing a much needed and deserved win by the Golborne keeper who thwarted some great chances. Player of the match Michelle Price had an excellent game and created the Triton goal with a terrific ball into the D for Amy Cruxton to turn home.

Eirias Men's 2s 2 Triton Men’s 2s 2

The men's 2s secured a hard earned point away in North Wales. Playing an experienced team Triton took to the field with a young side and experimental formation. It soon became clear that the formation failed to yield the desired control in the midfield and left the defence somewhat exposed. This contributed to the first penalty corner of the game, from which Eirias scored with an excellent drag flick. Having changed the team structure part way through the half and become comfortable with a fast, bouncy pitch, Triton came back into the game following an Etan Farrell goal created by rapid ball movement down the left and finished with Etan side stepping the keeper before sliding the ball into the vacant goal.

The improvement continued into the second half, with Triton starting to dominate possession and test the Eirias defence. This pressure eventually told with James Leek slotting home after a Brad Thorley penalty corner strike was saved. At 2-1 Triton looked to be gaining control but was caught out by Eirias' only notable attack of the half. A fortuitous miss-hit down the left fell to the Eirias forward who crunched the ball passed Toby Farrington in the Triton goal. A string of Triton half chances followed but all fell just the wrong side of the post or cross-bar, leaving the result a respectable if a little frustrating.

Oswestry Ladies’ 1s 9 Triton Ladies’ 2s 1

The ladies 2’s had a very hard game this week against a very strong Oswestry opposition. The team worked very hard but could not hold back the strength of the home team. A consolation goal game from player of the match Bethan Robinson who scored an amazing goal following Kayleigh Birchall’s assist. Hannah Williams stepped into defence this week and had a fantastic game.

Timperley Men’s 5s 3 Triton Men’s 3s 0

Equally the Men’s 3s also lost with its second consecutive defeat on the road by a 3-1 margin.

Whitchurch Ladies’ 3s 2 Triton Ladies’ 3s 2

The Ladies’ 3s earned a very credible draw away at Whitchurch. Within the first 5 minutes Triton was unlucky not to have scored from its initial breaks following strong pressure on the Whitchurch back line. The Triton defence soaked up continuous pressure from the Whitchurch attacking line. Whitchurch opened the scoring but despite the setback Triton continued to press. From this attacking endeavour Georgia Krippner scored her first ever goal for the team levelling at 1-1

The second half saw Whitchurch regain the lead in fortuitous circumstances following a shot that was deflected off a Triton stick. Again Triton continued to press and levelled again with its second goal. Player of the match Freya Diamond celebrated her Ladies' debut and birthday by scoring a fine goal. Once more the Triton defence stood strong and in the dying minutes of the game, the team was really unfortunate not to score a third goal and grab all three points.

Triton Men’s 4s 1 Alderley Edge Men’s 7s 1

The Men’s 4s kept its place at the top of the league following a draw in a very tight encounter. The early throes of the game saw the sides exchange blows without either getting on the scoresheet. Alex Potts, in particular, was unfortunate to have a good solo effort down the right saved by the Alderley Edge keeper. As the first half wore on, Alderley Edge became the more dominant side and was awarded a number of penalty corners that were well defended or missed. It was perhaps inevitable that Triton conceded from a short corner which was not cleared at the post.

Alderley Edge took its lead into the second half. However, in response, Triton played with more urgency and care on the ball. Alex Potts and Alex Mackey were both constant threats down either wing with a number of mazy dribbles causing Alderley Edge problems. The pressure on the Alderley Edge defence mounted and the Triton goal came from a moment of individual brilliance from Alex Mackey. Receiving the ball from Chris Calam, he took the ball passed a number of Edge players before slotting calmly into the net - a fine way to score a first senior goal in a second senior game. Triton was then kept in the game thanks to a fine defensive effort. Oskar Lindblad impressed on his return from Sweden - making a string of fine saves. Matt Kerry and Ted Apps were also impressive in defence with able assistance from Mark Drew and Chris Calam.

Triton Badgers U15s 0 Timperley 3

The Triton Badgers were always going to have a tough game against a strong Timperley team once it had conceded an opening goal in the third minute of the match. However the team put in a terrific, resilient defensive performance typified by skipper Ben Truscott and Matt Kerry in defence. There were several moments of good attacking endeavour by Dan Reardon and Ben Brock supported by Josh Lewis with Brock denied in a one on one with the keeper. Timperley extended its lead half way through the first half but Benji Townsend, Jonathan Holme and Gennaro Reddy kept good control in midfield to prevent further pressure whilst Harry Topping and James Bell tackled brilliantly on the flanks.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Initially there was good defending by Nathan Williams and Harrison Salt at fullback whilst keeper George Jenkins earned a player of the match accolade with a string of gymnastic saves. Triton went close to a goal with a Tom Statham penalty corner strike and a Alexander Mackey solo effort but Timperley had the last word with a third goal.

England Hockey Board Championship Men’s Tier 2, Round 3

Kendal Men’s 1s 0 Triton Men’s 1s 4

On Sunday Triton Men’s 1s progressed to the quarter finals of the National Championships with a 4-0 win away at Kendal. After an even first ten minutes, Triton started to take control of the match and was rewarded as Brad Stevens got his first goal for the team, poking home after his initial deflected effort had been saved. Then it was time for second team skipper and Brad’s dad Tony to get in on the act, with a typically cool finish across the goalkeeper into the corner. Captain Tom Chaddock returned to action following knee surgery to fire home after his initial effort was kicked back to him by the Kendal goalkeeper. At 3-0 at half time, Triton knew the next goal would be key and it was they team who got it as Mikey Calam dribbled at the Kendal defence lifting the ball into the circle for Chaddock to control and flick the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. There was also a standout performance from debutant Joss Berry as the team looks forward to a Quarter Final trip to Nottingham University in a fortnight.
