Tough Saturday For the Ladies

19 September 2018 by Tim Statham

Chester Ladies’ 2s 4 Triton Ladies’ 1s 0

This was a disappointing result for the Ladies’ 1s after last week’s encouraging start. Triton worked really hard in the first half holding the hosts to a deadlocked 0-0 at half time. Although the team had about 50% of the possession throughout the game with many close chances, the speed and skill of Chester led to four unanswered second half goals for the home team. Player of the match for Triton was Michelle Price who gave a terrific performance in the defensive half back position.

Triton Ladies’ 2s 2 Chester Ladies’ 3s 6

This was much improved performance this week from the inexperienced, new team consequently the home defeat was harder to take especially as the score line flattered Chester. All of the youngsters in the team continued to impress, there was a terrific goal from Bethan Robison on debut and Kayleigh Birchall at centre back was player of the match in just her second game for the team. Hannah Williams scored the other goal when she converted a penalty corner. The team will be looking to continue its progress in next week’s game when it hosts Winnington Park 2s.

Men’s Friendlies

In its final pre-season game the Men’s 1s lost 1-0 to Macclesfield 1s, the solitary goal coming despite a good game in goal from keeper Ant Birchall who returns to the Club this season. The Men’s 2s gave another very impressive performance beating Macclesfield 2s 5-2 with skipper Tony Stevens scoring twice and Mike Fielding, Ben Laxton, Joss Berry scoring one a piece. The Men’s 3s in its final pre-season went down 1-4 to Macclesfield 3s. All four Men’s teams are now raring to go for the start of the League programme next Saturday.

Wilmslow 3 Triton Badgers U15s 2

Heartbreak for the Badgers under the new tutorage of Sean Jenkins and Tim Statham as the team went down 2-3 at Wilmslow to a goal in added on time.

The new look team started very slowly with the hosts pressing from the pushback. Pressure on the Triton D led to a penalty corner which was converted at the near post by a deflection. The Badgers responded to this setback really well with Nathan Kimberlin attacking the Wilmslow D and this attacking endeavour led to an equaliser as Nathan's initial shot was saved but Josh Lewis rifled the rebound into the corner of the goal. A re-jig of the Badgers formation produced dividends, player of the match Freya Diamond produced some strong runs on the left with James Bell doing likewise on the right and Gennaro Reddy driving the team forward from midfield. Freya played in Dominic Church who got in behind the defence but couldn't quite cut the ball back to Ole Puttick. The hosts were lucky not to concede a penalty flick when their keeper appeared to deliberately lie on the ball preventing Ole Puttick and Nathan Kimbelin scoring. Tom Statham went close from the resultant penalty corner. Wilmslow continued to produce moments of concern for Triton but Harrison Salt and skipper Ben Truscott were excellent in the full back positions and Matt Kerry mopped anything up that got through.

The second half began with Wilmslow pressing and Triton producing some great counter-attacks. This led to the Badgers taking the lead. Alexander Mackey threaded excellent pass down the left to Ben Brock whose pace was too much for Wilmslow. A neat one two with Josh Lewis saw Ben drift passed the keeper to fire into the empty net. Triton's tails were up, a third nearly came when Tom Statham's pass put Ben Brock away, but Josh Lewis couldn't get on the end of Ben's cut back with the keeper stranded. Wilmslow regained the initiative and its pressure created an equaliser. Goalie George Jenkins produced a brilliant smoother when a Wilmslow attacker broke in behind the Badgers' defence. But the deadlock was broken in added on time after penalty corner was awarded seconds before the final whistle where a Wilmslow player produced an unstoppable drag flick. Hard luck on the team as a draw would have been a very fair reflection on the game.

Triton Beavers U13s 0 Oxton 4

Triton Beavers U13s started the season with a young new team, several having never played full pitch hockey before. Oxton are usually very strong, so losing 4-0 was a positive result considering our youth and inexperience. The team excelled in defence with solid goalkeeping from Dan Farrar, supported by the defence. Triton had some close goal scoring opportunities and penalty corners when Alistair Leek and Dan Reardon came close several times. Captain Darcey Pawezowski featured in much of the team’s positive moves. The sun was out, the Triton parents thoroughly enjoyed the game, but ultimately the visitors were a little too strong for Triton.
