Fab Opening Day Win For Ladies' 2s

21 September 2017 by Tim Statham

Triton Ladies’ 2s 7 Alderley Edge Ladies’ 4s 3

A hot afternoon greeted the opening League game of the season, but this didn’t deter the Ladies’ 2s getting off to a great start with an early goal. For the first 25 minutes the home team then dominated the game with really good all round attacking play. Triton scored three quick goals as the interval approached, but Alderley pulled one back on the stroke of half time when the home team’s defence lost concentration. Half Time arrived with Triton leading 4-1.

Right from the opening whistle of the second half, Edge came out looking like a completely different team. Its players were quicker to the ball and were passing around Triton. Despite several initial saves, the visitor’s attacks eventually beat the Triton keeper. But the home team wasn’t fazed by this passage of play, it got back on top of the game and three more goals were added sealing a fine victory. The great start to the season was clinched through 2 goals from player of the match Julie Harris, 2 also from Jemma Moran with one each from Leanne Williams, Poppy Jones and Becky Shaw.

Whitchurch Ladies’ 2s 1 Triton Ladies’ 3s 0

Short of some key players and in particular its captain and vice-captain, the Ladies’ 3s battled gracefully in a good first League game away at Whitchurch. Unfortunately the team lost 1-0, however it more than held its own for the majority of the match. Despite having the lion’s share of possession and multiple shots, Trion couldn’t find a way passed the excellent Whitchurch keeper. Whitchurch managed to grab the winning goal from a penalty corner, much the story of last season. There was some great play from all players, especially Sophie Stanley who was the team’s player of the match. Despite the defeat there was some excellent defence and good overall attacking play that was particularly enjoyed by debutants Karen Gooch and teenager Ella Prior.

Northop Hall 0 Triton Beavers U13s 7

The Beavers ventured across to North Wales for its second game of the season buoyed by a fine 6-3 home win over Deeside on the opening day the previous weekend. The game started in terrific style, when the hosts pushed back some ponderous defending was punished as Ben Brock pounced to score in the first minute. Northrop was understandably shaken and the Beavers pressed home its advantage. The second goal arrived around the 12 minute mark as Gennaro Reddy turned the ball in at the back post with almost his first touch. The second 20 minute period of the game started with a fine goal and a first for the Club from Dom Church, a hard long ball from Tom Statham was superbly deflected in by Church with a deft touch. Church and Statham linked up to create Brock's second of the game that made it 4-0. The team was rampant now, James Bell had a good chance but his shot won a penalty corner where Alexander Mackey had his effort chalked off as it struck the net well above the backboard. Statham set up Brock once more to complete his hat-trick before the 40 minute mark.

The last 20 minutes saw plenty of changes with the defenders given a run in midfield or upfront. Scott Whitaker was unlucky not to add to his goal from last week, Nicolas Mackey was denied by an excellent keeper whose efforts kept the score down. Jonathan Holme, Matthew Kerry & Benji Townsend had chances to score and Asha Kroll also had a good opportunity too. Player of the match Bethan Robinson scored the sixth with 10 minutes to go. But a rare counter attack led to a penalty corner for Northop where a goal bound effort was expertly saved by a very underemployed George Jenkins in goal. Dominic Church capped a great performance with his second and the team's seventh goal.

Pre-season Friendlies

Triton Men’s 1s ended its pre-season fixture programme with a fine a-3-1 win over Macclesfield. Ryan Griffiths netted from a Tom Chaddock pass in the first half whilst Fionn McKinney scored with a terrific drag flick at a penalty corner. Martin Gregory teed up Jack Newell for the final goal and the win will give the team great encouragement for its first League game next week, 11-45 at home to Manchester 1s. The Triton Ladies’ 1s had different fortunes away to local rivals Crewe Vagrants as it prepares for its first ever season in Northern League Div 2 SW. Leanne Williams netted the team’s only goal in a 6-1 reverse but the team will be looking for better things when it begins the season proper against Urmston 1s next Saturday. Conversely Triton Men’s 2s enjoyed a terrific confidence boost with a 6-1 win over Macclesfield 2s
