Back to Back Wins for Men's 1s & 2s

05 October 2017 by Tim Statham

Bangor University Men's 1s 1 Triton Men’s 1s 2

Triton Men's 1s made it the perfect start to the new season with a 2-1 success at Bangor University. In what was a fairly even game, Triton had the better of the opening stages frustrating Bangor with tackles in the middle of the pitch. The deadlock was broken in fortuitous circumstances when Ryan Griffiths ran to the baseline and looked for Andy Conway in the centre, only for his pass to be deflected in by a Bangor defender. The score remained 1-0 at half time with few clear cut chances from either side.

In the second half, Triton broke from a Bangor attack following a good save by debutant keeper Robbie Bell. As Triton pressed high up-field, Charlie Leech gained possession to play in Tom Chaddock on the left, who drew the keeper and squared for Jack Newell to roll into the open goal. Bangor pulled a goal back 5 minutes later from a penalty corner to make it 2-1 and set up a nervy finish. When Newell was sin-binned with 4 minutes to go, Triton was left hanging on. But the team won to secure a maximum 6 points its opening two fixtures.

Crewe Vagrants Ladies’ 1s 6 Triton Ladies’ 1s 0

The Ladies’ 1s was brought down to earth with a bump as it travelled to top of the table Crewe on Saturday. Triton fought hard for the first 20 minutes and kept Crewe at bay with some excellent saves from Rhiannon Bedford. Crewe eventually broke the deadlock after being awarded a penalty flick, then a further goal from a well worked penalty corner and a goal from a deflected, looping shot saw Crewe go into half-time 3-0 up.

In the second period Triton battled on and tested the Crewe keeper on a few occasions. However the home team added 3 more goals to seal the game. Tish Wing, Amy Cruxton and Laura Griffiths all made impressive debuts stepping up from the 2s to play a great part in a very tough game.

Tough Day for the Ladies' 1s

Triton Men’s 2s 3 Timperley Men’s 4s 2

The Men’s 2s secured a second consecutive win to continue an impressive start to the season. Triton started strongly with good possession and passing, securing the opening goal of the match through skipper Tom Fielding. Timperley came back to equalise with a good counter-attack play shortly afterwards. Triton was awarded a short corner just as the half time whistle blew, but with Mike Fielding producing an excellent drag flick, the hosts secured their second goal. Into the second half Timperley began playing more aggressively and put the pressure on Triton with frequent attacks. This did not stop Triton from netting their third goal, however, with a deflection from David Farrington. Timperley was able to pull a late goal back but fell short before the final whistle with a final score of 3-2 to Triton.

Triton Ladies’ 2s 0 Sale Ladies’ 2s 3

The Ladies’ 2s fought valiantly away at Sale, it was an unbelievable performance that certainly didn't reflect the final score. Sale scored its 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of the game while Triton was still settling, with a number of young players and some debutants. After the initial shock the hosts dominated possession, won several penalty corners and had a goal disallowed. In the second half the Triton defence successfully held off the few quick breaks of Sale, with a great performance at the back by teenager Issy Chivers. The Triton midfield and attackers kept the Sale defence pinned back for long periods, with hosts’ goalkeeper keeping them in the game saving numerous attempts that could have evened the score-line. Lucy Hawkrigg in just her second senior was player of the match.

Timperley Men’s 5s 1 Triton Men’s 3s 1

Triton Men’s 3s secured an impressive point away at Timperley following on from its opening day win at home last week.

Triton Men’s 4s 0 Alderley Edge Men’s 6s 2

Alderley Edge started the game well, but Triton was equal to it and had a good share of the play. The home team won a couple of penalty corners, but unfortunately these opportunities couldn’t be converted to goals. Triton went into half time 1-0 down but with everything to play for. Everyone in the team worked really hard throughout the whole match, but Alderley struck once more in the second half to secure all three points. There were great efforts all round the team especially the fantastic debut performances from Brad Stevens and Harry Clare, who both stepped up from U15s to play their first ever competitive senior games.

Neston Ladies’ 5s 2 Triton Ladies’ 3s 1

A great strike from Ella Prior earned the Ladies’ 3s a deserved lead in the first half away on the Wirral. Grace Elliot was the player of the match for the second week as she dominated the midfield as the team took the 1-0 score-line the break. With the lead Triton became a little too complacent conceded soon after the half time restart. Despite the setback the visitors improved in the second half and had the lion’s share of the play. Emma Catchpole made her debut for the team enjoying a very good game. However it was heartache in the end for the team as Neston won the game with the very last hit.

Macclesfield 7 Triton Badgers U15s 0

With several of the squad withdrawn to senior hockey, the team was grateful to Beavers Gennaro Reddy and Alexander Mackey stepping up to play fantastically well. In the first half Triton battled well but conceded 2 goals in open play against an older and bigger Macclesfield team. The team’s defending led by skipper Connor Berry and Ben Truscott was excellent and one counter-attack down the right wing, Sorcha O’Brien found O'Shay Reddy with brother Genaro crossing to Ole Puttick in the D who was so close to pulling a goal back.

The second half saw wave after wave of intense pressure, penalty corners and direct shots at goal. Triton leaked 5 goals more goals but had some strong forays into the opposing D, with strong midfield running from Ben Chadwick, O'Shay Reddy, Ele Beetlestone, Jen Coleman and Jamie Spears. Lots to learn from the game before next week’s visit of Neston.

Rossall School 7 Triton Beavers U15s 1

The U13s took on Rossall School U15s away in Fleetwood. Unfortunately the opponents were quite a bit older fielding more of a Badgers setup, which led to a very challenging game. The home team started on top but there was good defending by Kayleigh Birchall, Harrison Salt and Jonathan Holme to frustrate it, Kayleigh especially produced a wonderful goal-line clearance. The Beavers countered really well with Dominic Church, Bethan Robinson and Asha Kroll moving the ball quickly down field. When Ben Brock broke free in the D, his goalscoring opportunity was abruptly halted as he was knocked to the ground. A penalty stroke was awarded where Tom Statham produced a cool, firm finish into the corner to beat the diving keeper. Sadly the team didn't hold on to the lead as Rossall scored two quick goals, then added a third on the stroke of half time.

In the second period Triton battled hard, there was great defending by Matthew Kerry, some super saves from George Jenkins, whilst James Bell and Nicolas Mackey produced some very good skills on the ball. Scott Whittaker battled valiantly in defence to break up some very good attacking play by Rossall but despite this a further 4 more goals we added in the second half. At the end of the match Ben Brock broke free again to go one v one versus the keeper however he was denied by a very good save.
