Ladies' 1s Grab A Vital Away Win

01 March 2018 by Tim Statham

Triton Men’s 1s 0 Lymm Men’s 1s 4

In what was bound to be a tough game, Triton didn’t help itself conceding sloppily from a penalty corner with last week’s training session and its tactics going out of the window. Lymm went in 2-0 up at half time as they failed to close a Lymm midfielder down for him to wander into the circle and sweep home. Triton went close from a penalty corner before the break but again struggled with the physicality of the Lymm side. Again Triton was sleeping for the Lymm third and fourth goals with the Lymm goalkeeper only forced into action a couple of times in the second half. The final result was a fair reflection of the play as Triton succumbed to a better side.

Triton Ladies’ 1s 1 Sale Ladies’ 1s 0

Triton Ladies’ 1s North Division 2 South survival fight received a massive boast following a gutsy win. Sale came out determined from the off and was awarded a penalty corner within the first minute of play. A number of short corners were awarded in visitors’ favour but they were unable to convert any. Triton got back into the game with some beautiful passing but was unlucky to convert any of their chances, going into half time with the score deadlocked.

Triton came out the stronger side in the second half and was soon awarded a short corner but a straight strike from Michelle Price was saved. Triton played some lovely balls down the right hand side. From one of these allowing Amy Cruxton battled hard down to the baseline drawing the goal keeper out, Becki Burndred was on hand to convert putting Triton ahead. Sale was awarded a short corner on the stroke of full time but Triton’s defence held firm to see the game out.

Bangor City Men’s 1s 2 Triton Men’s 2s 2

After eleven wins in a row the Men's 2s promotion and title hopes took a knock with a draw on the long trip to North Wales. In a difficult match against a strong home side Bangor, Triton put up a good fight with an overall defensive play whilst looking for breaks into the opponents half. Greg Williamson and Ash Taylor scored the goals in what could be a valuable point as fortunately third placed Chester slipped to defeat.

Wilmslow Ladies’ 3s 3 Triton Ladies’ 2s 0

Despite a valiant effort away at Wilmslow and a player of the match performance by Carol Malbon in goal, the Ladies’ 2s slipped to defeat and to the bottom of the table. But only one point separates the bottom 3, so survival remains a possibility.

Triton Men’s 3s 4 Alderley Edge Men’s 6s 2

The Men’s 3s promotion push is back on track following another good win and could all boil down to a clash with top of the table Bowdon 5s on the final day in 3 weeks. Jack Robinson scored a hat-trick and Nathan Good had a terrific game playing in numerous different positions

Timperley Men’s 5s 5 Triton Men’s 4s 0

Playing with only 9 men the team knew that this would be a tough game. Triton struggled initially and conceded 3 goals within the first 15 to 20 minutes. Some solid defending from Dave Laxton and the returning Ted Apps along with the ever-reliable Oskar Lindblad in goal kept the score line down whilst Timperley were on top. As the half wore on, Triton settled down and started to play better hockey.

The second half saw Triton start on the front foot and the quartet of O'Shay Reddy, Matt Kimberlin, Brad Stevens and Sam Cotter all created a number of chances. Tom Swain, pushing up from left back, was constantly in the game and helping break through the Timperley midfield. A Timperley goal took the wind out of Triton's sail temporarily but the team continued to attack. In particular, Brad Stevens was very unfortunate not to score with the Timperley keeper making 2 fantastic saves and a Timperley defender clearing off the line. Triton deserved a goal but it was not to be.

Triton Ladies’ 3s 0 Wilmslow Ladies’ 4s 0

This was a terrific performance by the Ladies’ 3s to earn a draw against second in the table, free scoring Wilmslow. The visitors enjoyed the vast majority of possession and a lesser team would probably have conceded a large defeat. Great saves by Karen Ruston and some last minute tackles by Becky Pitt ensured there was no way through for Wilmslow in the first half.

Wilmslow came out strongly again after the restart but Triton was determined not to concede. Ella Prior and Sorcha O'Brien played terrifically well in the middle not giving the opposition and inch of space. Some quick breaks by the home side’s forwards were halted by solid Wilmslow defending and from the counter-attacks the pressure kept coming. On the final whistle there was yet another penalty corner awarded to Wilmslow, but some super defending kept the ball out to preserve a clean sheet and a hard-fought point.

Triton Beavers U13s 4 Neston 1

The Beavers really enjoyed a ding dong of a game against Neston eventually coming out 4-1 winners. The game started badly with a defence all at sea as Neston took a thoroughly deserved early lead. The visitors played some really good hockey but eventually Triton got a foothold in the game when Freya Diamond, Tom Statham & Alexander Mackey played good balls to setup attacks. Bethan Robinson & Ben Brock went close but the first half ended with Neston in the ascendancy.

Some valuable input at the break led to a dramatic turnabout in fortunes. Benji Townsend, Harrison Salt & Scott Whittaker defended so solidly in the full back positions whilst player of the match Alexander Mackey was terrific at centre back. The score was levelled when Tom Statham slammed home a penalty corner. The team had its tail up at this point and when the ball was played quickly around the D Bethan Robinson produced a quality finish at the far post.

The team attacked well down both flanks, Harry Topping linked up well on the left with Benji, whilst Freya Diamond gave some quality on the right with some great interchanges with Dom Church. The Beavers took a 2 goal lead when a great reverse hit by Gennaro Reddy looped up off a defender’s stick high into the net. Neston pressed to get back into the game but Joe Chadwick produced some good keeping preserving the lead. The game wouldn’t be complete without a Ben Brock goal, Ben wriggled free to slot under the keeper for 4-1. Near the end Nicolas Mackey slipped passed his marker but couldn’t quite get a shot away. All in all this was a terrific game from two very good teams & closer than the score line suggests.

Triton Badgers U15s 0 Oxton 7

The Badgers depleted by senior call-ups gave a fantastic account of itself until a barrage of late second half goals somewhat flattered Oxton. Triton began well but a good bit of skill and passing by the opposition saw the Badgers 1-0 down within the first 10 minutes. Connor Berry nearly replied for Triton when he was unlucky not to score with a brilliant reverse hit and Josh Lewis also went close on a couple of occasions. The rest of the first half was fairly even with Triton more than holding their own but a more experienced Oxton scored 2 more goals before half time despite some terrific saves from George Jenkins in goal.

The second half began strong for Triton as it constantly battled for the ball all over the pitch. The Triton 11 began to tire towards the end with some aching legs on show and Oxton took advantage late on.
