Men's 2s Promoted

23 March 2018 by Tim Statham

Triton Men’s 1s 4 Deeside Men’s 1s 2

A victory for the Men’s 1s in midweek kept the team in with a chance of a 4th place finish in NWHL Division 2. Triton started slowly but did eventually take the lead from a penalty corner converted by Fionn McKinney. But Triton conceded a sloppy equaliser a few minutes later as Deeside also converted a penalty corner. Triton gained a deserved 2-1 half time lead following some great work by Charlie Leech on the left as he beat a man to square for Tom Chaddock to sweep home from close range. Triton was at its best at the start of the second half and went 3-1 up when a Jack Newell effort was saved but Chaddock struck home the rebound. Newell got in on the act moments later to give Triton an unassailable lead. Deeside did score a late consolation following a further penalty corner.

Triton Ladies’ 1s 0 Prescott Ladies’ 2s 3

Triton Ladies’ 1s North Division 2 South survival hangs by a thread after this disappointing home defeat to the bottom club Prescott. It must win both its last 2 games and hope teams above lose their corresponding fixtures.

Men's 2 celebrating a magnificant promotion campaign

Triton Men’s 2s 9 Macclesfield Men’s 2s 1

The Men’s 2s won promotion in emphatic style with a demolition of Macclesfield. Although the team effectively had a game in hand of third placed Chester, it was determined to complete its campaign in good style. The match started evenly with possession tied and attacks coming from both teams. Triton finally broke the ice with two quick successive goals from Tony Stevens and Mike Fielding gave it a 2-0 advantage at the break.

Into the second half Triton slowed the game down with passing around the back whilst looking for chances to break down Macclesfield's defence. There a flurry of goals as Greg Williamson grabbed a hat-trick and Ben Laxton a brace with James Leek and Jason Farrell scoring one a piece. The Division 5 League title will now be decided in the team’s home clash with Sandbach next weekend. The high-scoring Triton team has now scored 104 goals in its 21 games so far this season.

Triton Ladies’ 2s 4 Whitchurch Ladies’ 1s 3

The Ladies’ 2s survival battle goes down to a nail-biting final game next Saturday against Timperley. Another terrific win – its fourth in 6 games - was secured through goals from Natasha Griffiths, a Becky Shaw brace and skipper Julie Harris whilst vice captain Katie Bell was player of the match for a consecutive week. In order to survive next weekend Triton must secure a better result than its rivals Buckley 1s does at Lymm 3s.

Bowdon Men’s 6s 0 Triton Men’s 3s 3

Despite this fine away win, the third place Men’s 3s tremendous promotion push came up short as the Triton Men’s 4s couldn’t secure a favourable result over second place Bowdon Men’s 5s.

Triton Men’s 4s 1 Bowdon Men’s 5s 5

A young Men’s 4s team with numerous teenager debuts gave a terrific performance against newly promoted Bowdon. Triton tried to start the game positively though the conditions, particularly for the first 10 minutes, helped neither side. Snow covered the pitch and visibility was poor. Once conditions improved, Bowdon got the breakthrough, from a penalty corner, taking an unfortunate deflection off a defender’s stick. Triton tried to respond and had a good spell of pressure for a ten minute period, but was unable to convert the chances created. That spell ended when a speculative clearance up field from Bowdon resulted in a fortuitous goal when injury to a defender left a Bowdon forward free to convert. Bowdon scored a third from another penalty corner for a 3-0 half time lead.

In the second half, Bowdon exerted more pressure and scored twice more from penalty corners. However, Triton did manage a goal in response, which was easily the best hockey of the game. A side line ball played up to Brad Stevens was played to Matt Kimberlin, a one-two with brother Nathan Kimberlin led to a smart finish by Matt over the diving keeper for his frst senior goal. A well-worked goal that an experienced Bowdon defence had no answer to.

The score from open play was even. But it was Bowdon's experience and ability at penalty corners that was the difference. Connor Berry was impressive at right back in only his second senior game and Ben Truscott also had a solid debut in defence making some excellent tackles when called upon.

Chester Ladies’ 4s 2 Triton Ladies’ 3s 3

This was another game with numerous teenage debuts and the youngsters didn’t disappoint with a fine away win. The game started with Triton keeping possession and attacking as a team. There was some great play between the junior girls, who stepped up and showed some excellent play. Player of the match Hannah Wright along with Ele Beetlestone made some great passes in midfield and this led to the open goal as they linked well with Sorcha O'Brien who setup Emily Bell for 1-0. Becky Pitt and Karen Gooch in defence constantly pressured the Chester attackers to stop counter attacks. There were some excellent runs made by Kayleigh Birchall down the wing supported by Katie Nelson who showed some great skill in midfield. Ella Prior played a quick interchange with Sorcha O’Brien and Emily Bell that resulted with Emily scoring to make it 2-0 at half time.

In the second half, Chester applied ever more pressure and Karen Ruston made some great saves to deny the hosts. But the attacking finally told as Chester scored twice to level at 2-2. However, Triton was determined to secure the win and Hollie Richardson and Lindsey Williams applied pressure upfront. Just before the final whistle was blown, Triton was awarded a penalty flick, which Emily Bell slotted passed the Chester keeper for her second hat-trick of the season and a thoroughly deserved 3-2 win. The game was a great experience for all the youngsters who did themselves and the junior coaching staff proud.

Lymm 0 Triton Beavers U13s 1

With only 10 players after 2 illnesses on Friday plus an injury at school, it looked this game would be a daunting task. But the Beavers totally took the game to its opponents. Freya Diamond was fabulous down the left and equally James Bell brilliant on the right to give the Lymm defence a torrid time. Tom Statham and Ben Chadwick dominated midfield to ensure Dominic Church and new centre forward Jonathan Holme were regularly in on goal. James Bell narrowly missed a cheeky lofted effort and Dominic also went close, first with a deft reverse defection, then a reverse hit that was a whisker away from the far post. Ben nearly scored at the far post from a penalty corner but a defender's body stopped the effort. Lymm did produce some great counter attacks but Matt Kerry, Harrison Salt & reserve goalie Dan Farrar made some stunning tackles. On the three occasions Lymm got in behind the back three, Joe Chadwick was off his line like a whippet to clear any danger. As half time neared Freya drove round the left of the defence to drop the ball back to Tom who rolled right and produced a hit high into the netting for 1-0.

The second half began with Lymm on top and Triton defending well. A counter-attack led to a penalty corner on 5 minutes, just as the snow arrived coming horizontally. The penalty corner was taken, Matt Kerry nearly forced over the line but the umpires blew for full-time to end the match early.
