Tough Weekend for the Senior Teams

13 March 2019 by Tim Statham

Macclesfield Men’s 1s 2 Triton Men’s 1s 1

Men’s 1s went down to a narrow defeat away at near neighbours Macclesfield. Triton was the brighter from the start, despite the game being played mainly in the midfield area but Piers Wooler found the breakthrough slipping the ball between the goalkeepers' legs. Macclesfield equalised ten minutes later as a miss-hit effort flummoxed Anthony Birchall and ended up creeping into the corner of the Triton goal. Macclesfield went on to claim all three points as Triton sloppily gave the ball away on the edge of its circle and was punished accordingly. A couple of late penalty corners were forced but the opportunities were defended as Triton lost by an odd goal for the fourth time in five matches.

Northop Hall Ladies’ 1s 2 Triton Ladies’ 1s 2

The Ladies’ 1s enjoyed a fine result in the trip to Northop Hall, N. Wales as all the players played out of their skin for the last away game of the season. Triton went 1-0 down on the 15 minute mark, but there was some brilliant skill from Michelle Price as she gave Triton the equaliser - half time 1-1.

Triton put in a resilient second half performance with some great possession and lovely passing all over the pitch. Michelle Price’s second goal took Triton into the lead with another skilful finish. However, ten minutes from the end Northop equalised off a penalty corner having previously been denied by keeper Carol Malbon with some brilliant diving saves.

Triton Men’s 2s 1 Sandbach Men's 1s 5

Triton Men's 2's lost against league leaders and local rivals Sandbach. Despite being out manoeuvred by a fast and skilful Sandbach side in a cut and thrust 1st half, Triton stayed in the game. Last ditch defending and an excellently well-taken Ryan Griffiths goal, created by an accurately worked fast break, kept the score tight at 2-1 at half time.

Unfortunately for Triton the 2nd half saw Sandbach's speed and movement take the ascendancy, with the visitors scoring 2 goals and extending their lead to 4-1,essentially putting the Triton resistance to bed. To its credit Triton continued to play; creating but failing to convert half chances in what had become a unnecessarily bad tempered, scrappy and overly open game.

Triton Ladies’ 2s 1 Timperley Ladies’ 4s 1

The Ladies’ 2s secured its first point of 2019 against a team that beat it 7-0 earlier in the season. Consequently the home team were up for a tough game. Timperley started quickly slotting in a goal within the first 10 minutes. However it was the home team who then took over with some fantastic play from player of the match Freya Diamond, who linkied up well with Bethan Robinson, Ele Beetlestone & Kayleigh Birchall. The home team had many shots on goal but to no avail with Kayleigh being denied by the post. The defence held off Timperley well backed up by Alex Milnes who made some excellent saves. Triton’s goal came after skipper Tash Griffiths’ initial strike was blocked by the keeper, but Bethan Robinson was on hand to fire it home. Ella Prior had a fantastic game, probably her best of the season and in the dying moments Megan Swain blocked a shot on the line ito preserve a thoroughly deserved point.

Sale Men’s 2 6 Triton Men’s 3s 0

The Men’s 3s with a scratch side suffered at the hands of champions’ elect Sale. Ben Read and Si Cruxton went close to consolation goals for Triton whilst Andy Pilbury and Josh Molesworth with Jordan Goostrey in goal worked incredibly hard to keep a good Sale team at bay.

Erias Ladies’ 1s 5 Triton Ladies’ 3s 0

The Ladies’ 3s put up a solid performance against the free scoring league leaders but ultimately was comfortably beaten. A rear-guard action was well fought by the defence line of Jackie Jones, Sandra Stanley and Becky Pitt. Keeper Karen Ruston was called upon frequently to make plenty of saves. With the constant attacks the midfield unit of Karen Gooch, Lindsey Williams, Amanda Woolley, Beth Keegan and Angelica Almeida played deep supporting the defence. Even attackers Georgie Krippner and Jen Coleman were often back in support, leaving Natalie Peever as a lone forward. came on as sub into midfield to rest up the hard working midfield. The tactics frustrated Erias who only led 1-0 half time.

Erias scored early after the restart which really rallied the team. A second was added quickly after but despite the setback Triton counter attacked and tried to score. The pressure finally tolled as Erias added two further goals late on in the game.

Triton Men’s 4s 2 Wilmslow Men’s 5s 3

The Men’s 4s was narrowly beaten in a competitive and closely fought encounter with Wilmslow and keeping with Triton's season, the game was not without incident or drama. Matters started serenely enough and Lee Wilson went very close to opening the scoring early on. Having beaten his man to get one-on-one with the keeper, his effort went narrowly wide. This seemingly served to wake Wilmslow up and, not long after, they took the lead with a good strike from a tight angle. This lead was soon doubled as Triton struggled to find any rhythm or fluency in their game. Goalie Adrian Perry had to pull off a number of saves to stop Wilmslow from increasing their lead further and Matt Kerry was, once again, fantastic in defence. Triton struggled to impose themselves in the final third and, whilst having possession around the D, they failed to create significant chances. At half time, the score remained 2 - 0 to Wilmslow.

The home team then showed their resilience in the second half. From the restart, Wilmslow were put under pressure and Triton scored early on. Tom Swain struck the ball sweetly from the top of the D - the Wilmslow keeper helpless. Triton followed this up by equalising through a Gareth Mitchell strike from a short corner. Wilmslow then regained the lead with an overhead smash after a ball bobbled up from a short corner - from the side-lines, it appeared that a number of players had stopped playing expecting a penalty for dangerous play. With Alex Potts providing an outlet with pace and trickery, Triton returned to their task going forward. Lee Wilson, the target of some heavy-handed tactics by Wilmslow, came close on a number of occasions but couldn't quite break through. Similarly, Jake Hales was unfortunate not to get the benefit of an advantage call when faced with an open goal following a foul on Lee Wilson. In the closing minutes, Triton secured a penalty corner with the shot and rebound cleared off the line by Wilmslow. Triton can be pleased with its second half performance in a very competitive fixture but with three games to go promotion and the lead title is still wide open.

Triton U16 Girls 3 Telford & Wrekin 1

The Triton Girls U16s produced a fantastic result to its Group stage table and secure a passage to the area finals at the beginning of next month. All the girls played with fantastic intensity across the whole pitch and worked together like a team which plays together every weekend. The efforts produced an incredible performance and thoroughly deserved win.
