Ladies' 1s Hit Macc for 6

27 March 2019 by Tim Statham

Triton Men’s 1s 3 Wilmslow Men’s 2s 6

Triton Men’s 1s put up a great fight at home to promotion hopefuls Wilmslow. After an even start, with Triton clearly looking dangerous on the break, the hosts forced a penalty stroke from their first penalty corner. Martin Gregory dispatched from the spot. Triton seemed in control at this point, but a quick fire double from Wilmslow left Triton chasing the game. Triton continued to press though and equalised three minutes before the break as Jack Newell drove to the baseline and squared for Etan Farrell to convert. After a positive restart to the second half some sloppy defending from Triton gave Wilmslow the opportunity to regain the lead. A moment of controversy arrived as Triton was denied a certain penalty corner and to rub salt in the wounds, Wilmslow scored a fourth goal moments later. Triton didn’t give up though creating chances and eventually Will Turner teed up Tom Chaddock for his first goal back after his injury lay off. Sadly the comeback quickly evaporated as Triton gifted another couple of goals when chasing the equaliser. But all in all a positive day capped off by the debuts of Matt Hawkrigg and O’Shay Reddy who slotted into the team nicely and put in fine performances.

Ladies' 1s celebrate fine win over Macclesfield 1s

Triton Ladies’ 1s 6 Macclesfield Ladies’ 1s 4

This was an incredible game at the end of a testing season for the Ladies’ 1s, which produced a brilliant and thoroughly deserved win. Triton started positively from the opening whistle, as Michelle Price opened the scoring within ten minutes of this ten goal thriller. However Macclesfield came back straightaway to equalise following a stroke of good fortune that very much reflected the team’s season. Triton responded to the set back as a great ball was fed into the D for Amy Cruxton to finish and retake the lead. But Macclesfield again pegged the score back at half time to 2-2.

In the second half Triton continued to dominate the game. From a penalty corner and a great initial strike, Hannah Wright was in the right place at the right time to grab the third and regain the lead for third time. Yet again Macclesfield came back at Triton and with two quick goals it took a 4-3 lead. But Triton never gave up, player of the match Michelle Price grabbing another two goals for Triton to complete another priceless hat-trick as the hosts took a 5-4 lead. To complete an amazing game Tracy Crump was in one on one with the keeper and she made sure that Triton had the victory it deserved, finishing the game 6-4 to defeat one of this season’s promoted teams.

Alderley Edge Men's 2s 2 Triton Men’s 2s 1

Triton Men's 2s succumbed to consecutive defeats on Saturday, losing a close game to Alderley Edge 2-1. Triton was under the cosh throughout but took the lead when a scrappy penalty corner was sent goalwards by Neil Titford and the ball crept under the keeper. Battling hard Triton held its lead into the 2nd half. Unfortunately, despite the possession clearly shifting into Triton's favour and pressure being applied, it was Alderley that was able to convert its chances in the 2nd half. Both goals coming from breakaway situations and converted with accurate reverse hits into the Triton goal.

Triton Men’s 3s 2 Crewe Vagrants Men’s 2s 4

The Men's 3s slipped to a home defeat to local rivals Crewe Vagrants. The game was played at a fast pace throughout and it was Triton who took an early lead with Si Cruxton finishing well. Vagrants responded to this and cameback strongly scoring two goals. Trion equalised at 2-2 when Dan Hancock then finished off a penalty corner move. The second half was very close with both sides going for the win. However it was Vagrants who got the winners in the last 10 minutes.

Triton Ladies’ 3s 1 Golbourne Ladies’ 3s 0

The Ladies’ 3s also completed its league season with a thoroughly deserved win. Golborne initially absorbed Triton pressure in the first half but when a shot on goal the ball was stopped illegally from entering the goal, the home team was awarded a penalty flick - Sophie Stanley duly despatched it home from the spot and Triton was 1 goal up. The second half saw chances for both teams with both defences standing their ground.

Crewe Vagrants Men’s 3s 3 Triton Men’s 4s 2

For the second week running, Triton was narrowly beaten in a tight game against promotion-chasing Crewe. The result means that Triton need to win both games and hope that, at least, one result goes in their favour in order to secure promotion. However, this was another good performance from Triton in which they dominated large parts of the play and created numerous chances. Indeed, the game started rather scrappily with neither side gaining a foothold initially. Crewe, however, won two short corners in quick succession - both of which were converted. Crewe's confidence soared as a result and keeper Adrian Perry made a fine reaction save to stop a certain goal to prevent Crewe going 3 - 0 up as his outstretched hand forcing the ball wide. Triton appeared to be woken by this and started to dominate possession and it is difficult to recall Crewe having another significant chance in the half after that. Chances did fall to Triton, though. Alex Potts threatened on the right and James Puttick buzzed around causing problems. Chris Calam and Mike Oliver drove the side forward from deep and it looked as though a goal would come. Indeed the team was harshly denied a penalty flick when Tom Statham’s goal bound effort appeared to be deflect over the bar by a defender’s arm Then despite forcing two successive penalty corners on the stroke of half time, Triton could still not find a breakthrough that their dominance deserved.

The breakthrough did come in the second half. Triton started strongly and pulled an early goal back from a penalty corner with Mike Oliver striking the ball and Tom Statham deflecting passed the Crewe keeper within about 5 minutes of the restart.
Crewe, however, were more threatening going forward and extended their lead when a ball into the D bobbled up and was slapped, from waist height, into the net. Back came Triton. Mark Drew, this time, getting on the score sheet with a slap shot after the ball came in from the right. Triton pressed for an equaliser - Chris Wilde, Alex Potts, Jake Hales, Tom Statham, Mike Oliver and James Puttick all threatened and created chances. The Crewe keeper and defence, just, held firm and the feeling was that if the game had lasted a couple of minutes longer, another goal would have come. On the balance of the play, Triton was probably the better side, unfortunately, this was just one of those games where good play well ultimately wen unrewarded.
