Excellent Wins for Men's 2s & 3s

28 March 2019 by Tim Statham

Deeside Men’s 3s 4 Triton Men’s 1s 2

Men’s 1s suffered another tight defeat yesterday in a hard fought match at Deeside. Triton created early opportunities, finding space around the Deeside circle but a lack of end product was punished when a Deeside forward chested the ball down in the circle before firing home. Triton equalised through Greg Williamson as his initial effort was saved before great enthusiasm to get to the rebound first and sweeping home on the reverse. It remained 1-1 at the interval. Ten minutes into the second half, Tom Chaddock struck from a penalty corner with a firm effort into the corner to the goalkeepers’ right. This spurred Deeside on however and they scored a quick fire treble despite Triton having sporadic chances in between with Etan Farrell and Mikey Calam both going close during this period. Again, Triton not getting the rub of the green with the decisions as clear penalty corners were not given and an advantage not played as Martin Gregory found the net following a Deeside foot in the circle. A final score of 4-2 to Deeside was probably not a reflection of the game as Triton’s winless run continues and they look to rectify this away at bottom of the table Leigh Manchester next weekend in the final game of the season.

Triton Men’s 2s 4 Deeside Men's 4s 3

Triton Men's 2's had a humdinger of a game against Deeside 4s emerging with a narrow win in a game of seven goals. Starting with positive intent Triton dominated the early possession but despite the ascendancy Deeside was gifted the opening goal of the game. Triton remained focused despite the disappointment and pushed forward, creating a string of excellent chances all of which seemed to end with shots straight at the keeper. But this changed when Alex Fitton produced a lifted strike that beat the keeper all hands down but was just missing the goal until Brad Stevens picked the ball out of the air to deflect it in. A second goal soon followed with Neil Titford flicking a penalty corner passed the keeper to give Triton a 2-1 half time lead.

The second half started in the same vein, Triton pressing and looking in total control. The third goal arrived when Brad Stevens finished off a magnificent move, in which the Triton ball pace, movement and passing accuracy left the Deeside team reminiscent of the daffodils in the Wordsworth - gently waving in the breeze). At 3-1 Triton appeared complete control, only to present Deeside with another goal, despite a fine initial save from keeper Toby Farrington. The home team responded to the setback and went straight down the other end and struck again. Tony Stevens received the ball in space before dribbling around much the Deeside defence then slipping the ball to James Leek for a tap in goal. Deeside reduced the deficit again forcing home a rebound from another Farrington save, but the win was not really in doubt as Triton made no further mistakes to see out the game. This victory secured Triton 4th in the league with a game to go, which is a great achievement for the young team following promotion last year.

Ladies 2s that improved so much this season

Wilmslow Ladies’ 4s 3 Triton Ladies’ 2s 1

In its final game of a testing season, the Ladies’ 2s suffered a cruel defeat after again producing another fantastic performance. The hosts approached the game believing it would be another comfortable win, however Triton gave them a tough challenge. Wilmslow did score first but then Triton equalised from a wonder strike by Freya Diamond. Wilmslow however nudged back in front just before half time. The second half started with Triton pressing well and creating great chances with player of the match Kayleigh Birchall running rings around the opposition. Sadly tiredness set in and the girls couldn’t keep Wilmslow at bay who scored another goal right at the death. Every player gave a terrific performance against a really good side, it’s been a hard season but the improvement has been palpable. The team will remain in division 3 with the new league structure ready to take on the next season a much stronger squad.

Timperley Men’s 6 0 Triton Men’s 3s 6

The Men’s 3s produced a real collective performance in its penultimate game of the season as the whole team contributed to hit Timperley 6s for six. Matt Kimberlin grabbed a brace including one from the penalty spot, Andy Pilbury scored a fine hat-trick and from very close range Alan Lewis forced home Chris Wilde’s effort.

Didbury Northern Men’s 7s 2 Triton Men’s 4s 2

The Men’s 4s put up an incredible display away at Didsbury. With a team composed mainly of Under 15s, including a couple of debutantes, the team looked to be heading for a tough afternoon. As expected, Didsbury dominated the early exchanges and took the lead around the 10 minute mark. However, even in the early part of the game, Triton showed that it was able to cause problems in and around the Didsbury goal, Lee Wilson being the main protagonist. Triton then started to dominate using the pace down the wings. The team equalised with some excellent build-up play between Mark Drew and Alexander Mackey - quick, attacking hockey that Didsbury struggled to contain. The ball was fed into the D from the right and Lee Wilson finished with aplomb. Triton then took the lead in similar fashion with Drew, Mackey and Tom Statham moving the ball quickly, down the right, before firing into the D. Wilson, again, with the finish. The game tilted back to Didsbury as their midfield began to outnumber the Triton back line. Triton struggled to get the ball forward and turned over possession easily. George Jenkins was called into action to make some and skipper Rob Timewell was forced to make a couple of goal line clearances. Eventually, however, the pressure tolled and Triton conceded for a second time.

After a breathless first half, the second half was slightly more sedate. That said, Didsbury had chances but the Triton teenage defence of George Jenkins, Ben Truscott, Matt Kerry and debutante Nathan Williams were up to the task. Mark Drew, energetic as always, assisted when needed as too did another debutante Simon Lee. Going forward, Triton created chances but could not force a winner. Lee Wilson searched for his hat trick and linked up well with the energetic Tom Statham and Alex Mackey. One moment of panic in the Didsbury D saw the ball buzz around with Matt Molloy and Josh Lewis coming close to applying the finish. The game finished with Triton deserving the draw for their defensive efforts and phenomenal hard work.
