Four out of 4 in the Final Men's Fixtures of the Season

04 April 2019 by Tim Statham

Leigh Men’s 1s 0 Triton Men’s 1s 2

Men’s 1s finished the season by ending a series of five narrow defeats in its final league game of the season at Leigh Manchester on Saturday. Knowing a win would be good enough to secure a third consecutive top half finish in NWHL Division 2 they beat the bottom side 2-0 in a game which should have been far more comfortable and more like the 10-1 success earlier in the season. The goals were scored by Martin Gregory who secured top spot in the scoring charts for the team in the league and Greg Williamson converting mid-way through the second half to secure the points. In the evening the club celebrated with its end of season dinner and the awards were dished out as follows.

Players player - Anthony Birchall – following his return to the Cub.

Most improved - Will Turner a product of the Club’s youth system.

Captain’s player - Jack Newell was committed as ever to training and stand in captain.

Ultimately a disappointing season in terms of league position but with the league restructure, the team will find themselves in NWHL Premier Division next year and looking to progress into the North League structure for the first time.

Triton Men’s 2s 4 Runcorn Men's 1s 0

Triton Men's 2's enjoyed a comfortable win over Runcorn to consolidate its fourth place in Division 4 South and finish its season in style. Taking control from the off Triton never looked to be in any trouble but initially struggled to break down the packed Runcorn defence. Half chances came and went, with a series of penalty corners squandered, before the pressure eventually tolled. The home team rotated its players effectively and this took its effect on Runcorn side as it tired, leaving space for Triton to exploit. There were two goals late in the 1st half coming from Rob Moss and Tom Chaddock, which put Triton in the ascendancy.

In the second half the team added two further goals from James Leek and debutant Nathan Kimberlin that secured the win. This concluded what was a extremely pleasing season, with the team finishing 4th in the league, its highest ever league position, having only been promoted last season.

Players player – Alex Fitton.

Most improved – O’Shay Reddy – following his step to the team.

Captain’s player – David Farrington for his support to Tony Stevens.

Triton Men’s 3s 8 Wilmslow Men’s 2 1

This was a fantastic end to what was otherwise a disappointing season overall fro the Men’s. The 8-1 thrashing of Wilmslow 4s sees the team leapfrog its opponents to finish in mid-table sixth place. Dan Hughes, Matt Kimberlin and Mike Oliver were amongst the goals.

Players player - Sam Johnson.

Most improved – Connor Berry – so improved a product of the Club’s youth system.

Captain’s player – Si Cruxton for his support to the captain Paul King.

Bowdon Men’s 8s 0 Triton Men’s 4s 4

The Men’s 4s enjoyed a comfortable win over Bowdon that compensated a little for slipping out of the promotion slots into third place in recent weeks in a game that was dominated from the first minute to the last. The score-line may have flattered Bowdon, slightly, as Triton had many more chances to extend their lead. It took Triton some time to break down the Bowdon defence, though. Whilst having the lion's share of possession, Triton was a touch guilty of over-elaborating their build-up play. Eventually, however, the opening goal came from a familiar source - birthday boy, Lee Wilson - with the goal at his mercy after some good play from Alex Mackey. Wilson finished the season as top scorer with 11 goals. That goal did not open the floodgates, however, as the Triton goals were evenly spaced. The second came from Alex Mackey, impressive again, with a crisp strike from the top of the D - the keeper helpless. The score remained at 2 - 0 into half time.

Bowdon came out of the blocks quickly in the second half and put Triton under its most worrying spell of pressure. The penalty corners were dealt with and the threat largely petered out after that. George Jenkins showed great concentration to make a number of good saves when he was called upon, his first clean sheet in senior men's hockey. Thereafter, Chris Calam, Matt Kerry, Alan Lewis and Tom Swain snuffed out any Bowdon attacks. The third Triton goal came from a penalty corner. Chris Calam slipped the ball to his right and Tom Statham fired the ball into the net. The final goal arrived when Tom Swain picked the ball up outside the D before driving to his left and striking on the reverse into the top corner. A comfortable win that secured 3rd place for the team and the most goals scored in the Division. The youngsters continued to impress - Jenkins, Mackey, Statham and Kerry all mentioned previously. Chris Wilde, Josh Lewis and Matt Molloy had their best games for the 4s - getting time on the ball and threatening around the D.

Awards for the team at the End of Season presentation on Saturday;

Player's Player - Tom Statham

Captain's Player - Chris Wilde

Most improved player - Matt Kerry.
