Men's 1s Continue Fine Start to 2020

26 January 2020 by Tim Statham

Stockport Bramhall Men’s 1s 0 Triton Men’s 1s 3

The Men’s 1s impressive start to 2020 continued away at Stockport Bramhall. Triton pressed high from the off and pinned Stockport back forcing a number of mistakes from the home team. Despite this Triton was unable to break the deadlock and it was Stockport who had the better early chances with keeper JP Dodd making a number of smart saves. A brilliant move broke through the Stockport defence when Jack Newell found Andy Conway who squared the ball perfectly for Ryan Griffiths to open the scoring and continue his rich vein of goal scoring form. The opening goal was soon followed by a second as Conway scored with a smart deflection after a pinpoint cross by Martin Gregory. Triton took a comfortably 2-0 lead inot half time.

It was Stockport who started the second half brighter as they forced Triton back, winning a penalty corner that was swiftly converted to make the score 2-1. Triton stuck to the job however and managed the game effectively as ill-discipline affected the home team. Austin, Harrington, Currie, Leidland, Trenbirth and Fitton kept cool in the defence and were rarely troubled by the home team as they controlled the ball. With 10 minutes to go and Triton made the game safe as they won a penalty corner. Although Chris Cooper’s initial shot was saved, then Mikey Calam hit the post before putting the rebound across the goal for Gregory to score. Further chances came for Turner, who looked dangerous throughout, but the game remained 3-1 to Triton.

Triton Ladies’ 1s 0 Alderley Edge Ladies’ 3s 8

Conversely Triton Ladies’ 1s suffered another difficult afternoon. The first half was quite tight as a battling performance, typified by player of the match Kayleigh Birchall in midfield, saw Triton frustrate Alderley. But a couple of slices of luck gave the visitors a 2-0 half time lead. Triton continued to play some good hockey after the interval. However the visitors eventually ran away with the game with a flurry of goals in the second half.

Triton Men’s 2s 3 Sale Men’s 1s 3

The Men’s 2s played in a helter-skelter game against Sale at Alsager Sports Hub. From a fast, high intensity start, Triton took a 2-0 within the first 5 minutes. The first followed a Mike Fielding aerial ball from the back to Tom Chaddock who similarly took the aerial route into the D where an on rushing Joss Berry lobbed the ball over the keeper with a deft touch. This was rapidly followed by a goal from Tony Stevens who received the ball on the penalty spot and slapped a bouncing ball passed the keeper. Unfortunately, Triton failed to maintain the intensity, allowing Sale to get a foot hold in the game and pull a goal back late in the 1st half.

After the break Triton again started well but despite significant pressure failed to score. Once again this offered Sale the opportunity to take advantage, which it did from the penalty spot. Frustrated by this, Triton again pushed forward, creating a series of chances, but all squandered or well saved by the Sale keeper. Adding to the building pressure Sale took the lead from a penalty corner. Determined not to lose Triton again pressed where, with 2 minutes to go, the ball was played into Joss Berry who whipped the ball passed the Sale keeper with an excellent reverse stick sweep.

Lymm Ladies’ 3s 5 Triton Ladies’ 2s 1

Triton Ladies’ 2s was quite unfortunate away at Lymm with a score-line that flattered the home team. Lymm scored three early goals before Julie Harris pulled a goal back converting a second half penalty corner. Ella Prior earned herself a player of the match award with a terrific wholehearted performance that encouraged the team. However a comeback was thwarted as Lymm added 2 late goals to gain the win.

Bowdon Men’s 6s 1 Triton Men’s 3s 0

The Men’s 3s slipped up away at Bowdon in a game it dominated for significant parts. Triton created multiple chances throughout the game with a significant number of attempts on goal but the hosts scored five minutes from half-time with a breakaway goal. However the team remains in second place in Division 5 SE three points clear of second place.

Triton Men’s 4s 0 Knutsford Men’s 3s 4

The Men’s 4s battled hard, showing a vast improvement over the previous week but ultimately went down to four second half goals. Knutsford dominated the game for large periods, as the home team anticipated. However, a combination of wasteful finishing and a determined Triton rear-guard saw the 4s shut Knutsford out until half time. Indeed, Triton came close to scoring through Ben Brock and Lee Wilson who had good chances.

In the second half, Knutsford scored four times, a couple fortuitous, without reply. At times, Triton lost its shape trying to pull a goal back but the team cannot be faulted for this endeavour. Triton can be pleased with the way the defence and midfield worked hard to make things difficult for the opposition. Keeper Geroge Jenkins had a fantastic game and pulled off a couple of very good reaction saves, James Molesworth, Si Cruxton, Ben Truscott and Nathan Williams all defended resolutely. Going forward, Triton tried to break with pace down the flanks. Brock was a significant threat and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet - coming close to scoring in both halves and deserving a goal by virtue of his effort.

Bowdon Ladies’ 7s 2 Triton Ladies’ 3s 0

Triton Ladies’ 3s also suffered a disappointing defeat away at Bowdon but similar to the Men’s 4s put up a much improved performance.
